Medicare Supplement Plans Kansas 2027

Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) | Last updated October 8, 2026

For most people in Kansas new to Medicare in 2027, the best Medicare Supplement plans are Plan G, Plan N and High-Deductible Plan G. Benefits are standardized by letter, so compare Kansas prices for the same plan across insurers.

Kansas Medicare Advantage plans fall from 87 to 80 for 2027, and HCSC’s HealthSpring is leaving Kansas. Members whose plans end generally have a guaranteed issue right to buy certain Medigap plans, so many Kansans are comparing Medigap with Part D this fall.

What Original Medicare Leaves You to Pay

Original Medicare leaves gaps, and a Medicare Supplement plan is designed to fill them. It can pay these costs:

Original Medicare Gap What It Means for You Covered By
Part A deductible Applied each hospital benefit period instead of annually. The 2026 amount was $1,736. Plans B, C, D, F, G and N fully; K, L and M partially
Part A hospital coinsurance Daily charges after day 60 of a hospital stay, which climb after day 90 All 10 plans, plus 365 extra hospital days
Part B deductible An annual deductible owed before Part B pays. In 2026, $283. Only Plans C and F
Part B coinsurance Typically 20% of the approved amount, with no annual cap All plans (K and L in part, N with copays)
Part B excess charges As much as 15% over the approved amount from doctors who do not accept assignment Plans F and G
Skilled nursing coinsurance Daily charges for days 21 through 100 of a covered stay Plans C, D, F, G, M and N (K and L in part)
Emergency care abroad Care outside the U.S. is generally not covered by Original Medicare. Plans C, D, F, G, M and N, up to plan limits

No limit unless you add a supplement: Original Medicare does not have an out-of-pocket maximum. If you lack a Medigap plan or other coverage, the 20% you may owe on Part B services has no ceiling.

What Drives Kansas Medigap Prices

Your Age

Many insurers charge more as you get older.

Your ZIP Code

Prices vary by state and area.

Tobacco Use

Tobacco users usually pay more.

Discounts

Household or other discounts, which vary by insurer and state.

Pricing Method How the Premium Is Set Over Time
Community-rated All people in an area pay one premium, whatever their age Does not go up as you age, but may go up for inflation and other reasons
Issue-age-rated Based on your age when you buy Does not go up as you age, but may go up for other reasons
Attained-age-rated Based on your current age Rises as you age, on top of other increases

Which method applies depends on the insurer and the state. Before buying, find out how a policy is priced, not only what it costs now.

Prices in Kansas vary by ZIP code and insurer. Always quote your exact ZIP from several insurers.

When You Can Buy

Key Takeaway

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months and begins the first month you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During this period, an insurer cannot turn you down or charge you more based on your health.

Be aware: once your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period has passed, and without a guaranteed issue right, insurers in most states may ask health questions and turn you down or charge you more.

In certain situations, federal law also grants guaranteed issue rights, generally within 63 days of other coverage ending:

You May Have a Right to Buy If

✔

Your Medicare Advantage plan exits your area or stops serving Medicare

✔

You enrolled in Medicare Advantage when you first became eligible at 65 and want to go back within the first year

✔

You left a Medigap policy to try Medicare Advantage for the first time and want to go back within a year

✔

Employer or union coverage that pays after Medicare stops

✔

Your Medigap insurer goes bankrupt or deceives you

Your state may give you extra rights: in New York and Connecticut you can enroll in Medigap at any time of year with no health questions, while states like California and Oregon offer an annual window to move to a plan that is equal or lesser.

What Medigap Does Not Cover

Not Covered by Medigap

✔

Prescription drugs: add a standalone Part D plan

✔

Routine dental care, hearing aids, and eye exams for glasses

✔

Long-term custodial care, whether in a nursing home or at home

✔

Private-duty nursing

In 2027, a standalone Part D plan can have a deductible of no more than $700 and an out-of-pocket cap of $2,400. Buy it with Medigap to avoid a late enrollment penalty that lasts for life.

Medigap vs Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage Original Medicare + Medigap
Monthly premium Often low or $0 (2027 average $12, CMS) Higher; varies by plan letter, age and ZIP
Doctors Usually a network Any provider in the U.S. that accepts Medicare
Costs when you get care Copays and coinsurance up to a yearly maximum Low and predictable; on Plan G, little or nothing once the Part B deductible is met
Drug coverage Usually included Add a separate Part D plan
Dental, vision, hearing Many plans may include some coverage Not included
Changing later Every year during Annual Enrollment Health questions in most states once your Medigap Open Enrollment Period ends

Plans K and L: Lower Premiums With a Cost Cap

Rather than paying all of most costs, Plans K and L pay a portion: Plan K covers 50% and Plan L covers 75% of most cost sharing, leaving the remainder to you. In return for their lower premiums, both carry an annual out-of-pocket limit set by Medicare each year. After you hit that limit, the plan covers 100% of covered services for the remainder of the year.

These plans may fit people who want catastrophic protection for a lower premium and can manage some costs along the way. Check whether your insurer sells Plan K or L in your state.

Plans C and F for Earlier Enrollees

Only Plans C and F cover the Part B deductible. Since January 1, 2020, they have not been sold to people newly eligible for Medicare. If you became eligible for Medicare before that date, even without enrolling, you may still be able to purchase Plan C or F, including a High-Deductible Plan F that has the same $3,050 deductible for 2027.

For most people eligible to buy either, set the yearly premium gap between Plan F and Plan G against the Part B deductible. If the extra cost of Plan F exceeds what it saves you on the deductible, Plan G is the better value.

Medigap Under 65

If disability or end-stage renal disease gives you Medicare before 65, federal law does not make insurers sell you a Medigap policy, though many states require it. Prices for those under 65 can run much higher, and plan options may be limited. At 65, you get a fresh six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, during which you can buy any plan sold in your state at the same prices others your age pay.

Medigap When You Travel

Within the U.S., a Medigap plan goes wherever you go, since it works with any provider that accepts Medicare. Abroad, Original Medicare generally pays nothing, but Plans C, D, F, G, M and N pay 80% of emergency care outside the U.S. after a $250 annual deductible, up to a $50,000 lifetime limit.

Rate Increases and Switching Insurers Later

Once you buy Medigap, its benefits never change, but its premiums can. Insurers submit rate increases to state regulators, frequently once a year. Since the same plan letter has the same benefits everywhere, moving to a cheaper insurer can cut costs while your coverage stays the same.

The drawback is underwriting. Outside your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a guaranteed issue situation, most states allow the new insurer to ask health questions and turn you down. Do not cancel your current policy until the new one has been approved and is in force.

How Medigap Claims Work

Usually you won’t ever file a Medigap claim. Your doctor sends the bill to Medicare, Medicare pays its portion, and the claim passes automatically to your Medigap insurer, which then pays its portion. A Medicare Summary Notice and an explanation of benefits show you what each one paid.
