➤ How do I compare Medicare Supplement plans?
Pick the plan letter first, based on how much cost-sharing you want, then compare prices for that same letter across insurers. Because benefits are standardized, the comparison is about price, pricing method, rate history, discounts and service.
➤ Are all Medigap plans with the same letter the same?
Yes. Federal law standardizes Medigap benefits by letter, so a Plan G from one insurer covers exactly what a Plan G from another insurer covers. Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin use their own standardized designs instead of letters.
➤ What is the difference between Plan G and Plan N?
Plan G covers everything Plan F does except the Part B deductible. Plan N also skips the Part B deductible, adds copays of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for ER visits that do not lead to admission, and does not cover excess charges.
➤ What is High-Deductible Plan G?
High-Deductible Plan G covers the same benefits as Plan G after you meet a yearly deductible, which is $3,050 for 2027, up from $2,950. Premiums are usually much lower, making it a low-cost option for catastrophic protection.
➤ Can I still buy Plan F?
Only if you were first eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Plan F and Plan C are not available to people who became eligible on or after that date. For new enrollees, Plan G is the closest option.
➤ What pricing methods do Medigap insurers use?
Insurers use community rating, where everyone pays the same regardless of age; issue-age rating, based on your age when you buy; or attained-age rating, which rises as you get older. The method affects how your premium changes over time.
➤ Does Medigap cover foreign travel?
Plans C, D, F, G, M and N cover 80% of emergency care outside the U.S. after a $250 deductible, up to a $50,000 lifetime limit. This benefit is the same from every insurer that sells those plans.
➤ Can I use a Medigap plan with Medicare Advantage?
No. Medigap only works with Original Medicare and cannot be used to pay Medicare Advantage costs. If you switch from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare, you can buy Medigap, but health questions may apply outside guaranteed issue windows.
➤ When is the best time to buy a Medigap plan?
The best time is your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts the first month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During that window, insurers cannot deny you or charge more because of your health.
