For 2027 Medicare Advantage coverage, begin by separating what is known from what will not be final until plan materials are released in the fall. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurers, and benefits, premiums, drug formularies, service areas and provider networks can change each year. The Annual Enrollment Period generally runs from October 15 through December 7, with coverage taking effect January 1.
During that window, people with Medicare can switch plans, move from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or return to Original Medicare. Review the Annual Notice of Change rather than assuming a familiar plan will work the same way in 2027.
California residents should look especially closely at county availability and network design. A Medicare plan that includes a preferred physician or hospital system in Los Angeles County may have a different network in Orange, San Diego, Sacramento or the Bay Area. Confirm that primary care physicians, specialists, pharmacies and hospitals are in network for the specific 2027 plan, not simply affiliated with the carrier.
If you are considering Humana or another insurer, check whether its plans are offered in your ZIP code area, such as Arkansas, California, or Colorado, and whether the particular plan’s prescription coverage suits your medications.
For people already enrolled in Medicare Advantage, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, usually January 1 through March 31, permits one change: a switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or a return to Original Medicare, with or without a stand-alone Part D drug plan. Special Enrollment Periods may also be available after events such as moving, losing qualifying coverage, or becoming eligible for Medicaid.
The principal alternative is Original Medicare paired with a Part D prescription drug plan and, where available and affordable, a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy. This arrangement typically provides broader provider choice because it does not use a Medicare Advantage network, but premiums and enrollment protections differ.
In California, free, unbiased HICAP counseling can help compare plans, understand Medigap timing and assess whether a change fits your doctors, prescriptions, travel habits and budget.
