➤ What is a Medicare Advantage PPO plan?
A Medicare Advantage PPO is a plan with a network of preferred providers that also covers out-of-network care from providers who accept Medicare, at a higher cost. You usually do not need referrals to see specialists.
➤ Are PPO plans being cut for 2027?
Yes. HCSC is cutting 48 PPOs, Humana 37, UnitedHealthcare 34 and Aetna 20 for 2027, and Kaiser Permanente is dropping its last 3. If you are in a PPO, check whether your plan continues. Watch for a non-renewal letter.
➤ How is a PPO different from an HMO?
A PPO covers out-of-network care at a higher cost and usually needs no referrals. An HMO generally covers only in-network care except emergencies and urgent care, often with lower premiums and copays. Your doctors and travel habits decide which fits.
➤ Do PPOs have an out-of-pocket maximum?
Yes. PPOs have two limits: one for in-network care and a higher combined limit for all covered care, in and out of network. If you plan to use out-of-network providers, compare the combined limit. Both limits appear in the summary of benefits.
➤ Who should choose a PPO?
A PPO may fit people who travel, split time between states or want to keep doctors outside a single network. If all your doctors are in one network and you stay close to home, an HMO may cost less.
➤ What if my PPO is ending?
Your coverage continues through December 31, 2026, and you get a Special Enrollment Period. You can choose another PPO or HMO, or Original Medicare with Medigap and Part D, generally with a guaranteed issue right.
➤ Are there $0-premium PPOs?
Some areas may have $0-premium PPOs. For 2027 Clover Health is adding a new $0-premium PPO. A $0 premium does not mean $0 cost, because you still pay your Part B premium plus copays and coinsurance.
➤ Do PPOs include drug coverage?
Most Medicare Advantage PPOs include Part D drug coverage. For 2027 any plan’s Part D deductible can be up to $700, and the out-of-pocket cap on covered drugs is $2,400. Check your drugs on each formulary.
➤ Can I use a PPO in another state?
PPOs cover out-of-network care from providers who accept Medicare, which can help when you travel, and emergencies are covered anywhere in the U.S. Out-of-network costs are higher, so check your plan’s rules. Snowbirds should confirm coverage before leaving.
➤ When can I enroll in a PPO for 2027?
Enroll during Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026, for coverage starting January 1, 2027. If you are already in Medicare Advantage, you can make one change from January 1 to March 31, 2027.
