Medicare Supplement Plan G is one of the most comprehensive Medigap options available to people who want help with out-of-pocket costs left behind by Original Medicare. Like any Medicare supplement plan, this medigap plan is designed to work alongside Part A and Part B, not replace them.
That means its value lies in filling gaps such as coinsurance, certain copayments, and other cost-sharing that can add up quickly after a hospital stay, outpatient procedure, or specialist visit. As supplemental insurance, it can provide more predictable healthcare costs for a member who wants broader coverage.
In practical terms, Plan G covers nearly all of the standardized benefits offered under a modern supplement plan. It generally pays Part A coinsurance and hospital costs after Medicare benefits are used up, Part B coinsurance, blood, hospice coinsurance or copayments, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, and foreign travel emergency coverage within plan limits. It also covers the Part A deductible and any Part B excess charges, which can matter if a provider bills above the Medicare-approved amount.
Because it is standardized insurance, the core benefits are the same across Mediare insurance companies, such as Allstate or Blue Cross Blue Shield, even though premium, plan cost, and plan premiums can vary by company and location.
What it does not cover is just as important: the annual Part B deductible. With Plan G, that deductible is the main cost most enrollees pay before the plan’s full Part B-related coverage begins. It also does not include prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, hearing aids, or long-term care.
So while this Medicare supplement delivers strong benefits, it is still a supplement to Original Medicare, not an all-in-one policy.
