➤ How many Medigap plans are there?
There are up to 10 standardized Medigap plans, labeled A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M and N. Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin use their own standardized designs, and not every insurer sells every letter in every state.
➤ Does Medigap cover drugs?
No. Medigap does not include prescription drug coverage, so you need a separate Part D plan. For 2027, the Part D deductible can be up to $700 and the out-of-pocket cap is $2,400, so budget for both premiums when comparing total costs.
➤ What does Medigap Plan G cover?
Plan G covers everything Plan F covers except the Part B deductible. That means after you pay the Part B deductible each year, it generally picks up your remaining Medicare-approved costs, which is why it is popular with new enrollees.
➤ How does Medigap Plan N differ from Plan G?
Plan N covers Part B coinsurance except for copays of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for ER visits that do not result in admission. Unlike Plan G, it does not cover Part B excess charges, but premiums are often lower.
➤ What is the High-Deductible Plan G deductible for 2027?
The High-Deductible Plan G deductible for 2027 is $3,050, up from $2,950 in 2026. Once you reach it, the plan pays like regular Plan G for the rest of the year, and the trade-off for that higher upfront exposure is usually a lower monthly premium.
➤ When is the best time to buy a Medigap plan?
The ideal time is your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts when you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During that window there is no medical underwriting, while outside it insurers in most states can ask health questions.
➤ Can I have Medigap and Medicare Advantage at the same time?
No. Medigap works only with Original Medicare and cannot be used alongside a Medicare Advantage plan. If you move from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare, you may be able to buy a Medigap policy, depending on timing and your state’s rules.
➤ Can I still buy Medigap Plan F or Plan C?
Only if you were first eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. People who became eligible after that date can choose Plan G, which offers nearly the same coverage except for the Part B deductible.
➤ How are Medigap premiums priced?
Insurers use one of three methods: community-rated, issue-age-rated or attained-age-rated pricing. The method affects how your premium may change as you get older, so ask which approach an insurer uses before comparing quotes, not just today’s price.
